{"id":128523,"date":"2025-11-26T19:04:31","date_gmt":"2025-11-26T18:04:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/scolopi.org\/fiesta-del-patrocinio-de-san-jose-calasanz\/"},"modified":"2025-11-26T19:08:35","modified_gmt":"2025-11-26T18:08:35","slug":"feast-of-the-patronage-of-saint-joseph-calasanz","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/scolopi.org\/en\/feast-of-the-patronage-of-saint-joseph-calasanz\/","title":{"rendered":"Feast of the Patronage of Saint Joseph Calasanz"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<p align=\"center\">Letter for the Feast of the Patronage of Saint Joseph Calasanz<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p align=\"center\">To the whole Pious Schools community<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>Dear brothers and sisters,<\/p>\n<p>We joyfully celebrate the Feast of the Patronage of Saint Joseph Calasanz, a day deeply united to the Piarist mission, because it recalls not only the holiness of our Holy Father, but also the mark his charism left on society in his educational and evangelizing dedication at the service of the little ones.<\/p>\n<p>This year, our feast is particularly illuminated by a motive for gratitude: the significant reference to Calasanz in the first apostolic exhortation of Pope Leo XIV, Dilexi te. These words, which the Holy Father addresses to the whole Church, have a special echo in our hearts:<\/p>\n<p>In the sixteenth century, Saint Joseph Calasanz, struck by the lack of education and formation among the poor young people of the city of Rome, in a few rooms adjoining the church of Santa Dorotea in Trastevere, created the first free popular public school in Europe\u2026 We can consider this courageous priest \u201cthe true founder of the modern Catholic school, which seeks the integral formation of the human person and is open to all\u201d. [1]\n<p>A few days later, on the occasion of the 60th anniversary of Gravissimum Educationis, he added:<\/p>\n<p>In seventeenth-century Rome, Saint Joseph Calasanz opened free schools for the poor, sensing that literacy and numeracy are a matter of dignity before being a matter of competence. [2]\n<p>The fact that the first exhortation of a Pope takes poverty as its central theme, so intimately linked to our Piarist identity, and explicitly mentions Calasanz, is not for us a motive for prestige, but a reaffirmation of the truth of our vocation. It reminds us that we were born as an educational and evangelical response to the real poverty of children, and it confirms that the Piarist mission continues to be necessary, fruitful, and timely.<\/p>\n<p>The Patronage is also a feast of communion. This year we give thanks for the steps the Order is taking to grow in fraternity: the creation of new networks, shared projects, the meetings celebrated in the four Circumscriptions, and the many spaces of collaboration that are opening among Piarists, institutions, and Demarcations.<\/p>\n<p>We especially celebrate the creation, a couple of days ago, of the Global Alumni Network and, precisely today, the birth of the Network for Non-Formal Education and Social Action, which expresses the missionary vitality of our presences. As every year, we recall that this feast is also the celebration of the Calasanctian Family, the seven congregations [3] that share the inspiration of our Founder. We give thanks for this richness, which multiplies Calasanz\u2019s project in so many forms of consecrated and apostolic life.<\/p>\n<p>Non-Formal Education and Social Action has, for years, been a platform very dear to the Piarists. In these fields, our educational, pastoral, and transformative capacity reaches, with creativity and greater adaptability, the needs of children, adolescents, young people, and families in situations of vulnerability; and it becomes a space where the Gospel is incarnated in a direct, concrete, and effective way. The new network that we present today seeks to make visible, to articulate, and to strengthen the immense Piarist work on the four continents.<\/p>\n<p>In this context, we wish to congratulate Itaka Escolapios, which celebrates its 25 years of life. Its work, authentically Piarist and shared with the Fraternity, stands out for its rigor, creativity, and real capacity for transformation. Its mission, now extended to many countries, is a motive for pride and a mature expression of the charism.<\/p>\n<p>My gratitude also extends to all the institutions, foundations, or associations of our Demarcations, great or small, well-known or discreet, which work with passion and dedication in this mission; and to each of the people who make these works possible: educators, youth leaders, social workers, professionals, volunteers, financial supporters, families, religious communities, and whole Provinces that sustain and animate them. Thank you very much.<\/p>\n<p>In this very special week, in which many of our schools, social works, and presences celebrate the feast of Saint Calasanz, I wish to address a warm and grateful greeting to all our students, girls and boys, who are always at the center of our mission, and to all the educators, women and men, who in all our works celebrate these days the joy of belonging to a mission that sows hope and builds community.<\/p>\n<p>To all of you, my fraternal embrace and my grateful prayer.
