Father Antoine Thierry Edang lives and works in the college of piarists in Krems. As a piarist father, he is committed to the upbringing and care of children and adolescents. In the “Campus Ministry Krems” he celebrates services and is available for pastoral care. In an interview, he talks about the order, the current restrictions imposed by COVID-19 and why he became a piarist.<\/em><\/p>\n

What is special about the piarists?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Father Antoine Thierry: The commandment of love, applied universally to every Christian, is lived in the Churchdifferently, according to the diverse call granted by the Holy Spirit. We, Piarists, live it out in a manner that brings us together as brothers for a specific ministry of evangelizing children and Young people, not forgetting the natural and permanent context in which they live, their families. Then what is special about piarist is: to see and recognize Jesus Christ in poor children and to consecrate our life to serve them.<\/p>\n

We are currently restricted in our everyday life by the measures taken by the Austrian federal government. How can you imagine your everyday life? What do you do?<\/strong><\/p>\n

I think it is not only in Austria but the all world that is living this current situation. It is really an uncommon and uncomfortable situation. It is a moment of crisis but we need first of all to accept and understand the exclusivity of the situation. In fact Crisis from its Hebrew root may signify opportunity to work or to be creative. It means in my daily life I have two mains activity: to pray and to work (ora et labora<\/em>). It looks really like monastery style of life. I have had such experience during my noviciate. This period of locked-in is an opportunity to think, rediscover, to perform my relation with God and with others<\/p>\n

It is not long for Easter. How important is Lent for you?<\/strong><\/p>\n

I thing Lenten period, which leads us to the celebration of Holy Easter, is for me and the Church a most valuable and important liturgical time. As the Church awaits the definitive encounter with her Spouse in the eternal Easter, the Church community, assiduous in prayer and charitable works, intensifies her journey in purifying the spirit, so as to draw more abundantly from the Mystery of Redemption the new life in Christ the Lord (cf.\u00a0Preface I of Lent<\/em>). For me Lent is a moment of consistent spirituality when I need to leave the virtual and superficial world in order unites myself deeply with the Spirit by living for and with that same Spirit of God. Lent leads me to a particularly intense encounter with the Lord, calling me to retrace my steps of Christian initiation.<\/p>\n

How and where do you pray?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Piarist are men of prayer. We pray with Breviaries. We celebrate mass in our chapel and church. That concerns the community prayer dimension. But each person has a specific moment of personal prayer. We consecrate in the special way our prayer under the protection and through the intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary Mother of God and Mother of the Pious schools. We enroot also our spirituality in Christ Crucified: \u201cIn deep silence and peace of body and soul, kneeling down or choosing any other convenient posture, following Saint Paul\u2019s example, we will strive to contemplate Christ crucified and His virtues, so as to know and imitate them, so that we can remember them during the whole day\u201d (Saint Joseph Calasanz Constitutions, No. 44).<\/p>\n

Why did you become a piarist?<\/strong><\/p>\n

It is important for me to say that I wanted first all to be a Teacher. As I grew up in a religious context and I study in a catholic schools I was touched by the message of the Gospel. Once one of my Teachers told me Jesus was a pedagogue, an educator: \u201cJesus went throughout Galilee, teaching in their synagogues, preaching the Good News of the kingdom, and healing every disease and sickness among the people.\u201d From that day I wanted to be a teacher like Jesus. The best image of that teacher for me was a priest. Finally went I read the life of Calasanz I discovered it was possible to be religious, educator and priest. Thus I freely and joyfully accepted to follow the Piarist formation process. And today I am a happy Piarist.<\/p>\n

What do you want to give to the children and parents in the Piarist schools?<\/strong><\/p>\n

We want them to know the education that prompted Calasanz has a purpose: to make children capable of grow integrally so that they can transform the world<\/em>. Maybe it sounds a bit strong, but that is the intuition of Calasanz and, therefore, it is the essential matter that children must discover and incarnate in their educational process: With Piarist, children are able to make a different world<\/em><\/p>\n

What do you wish for the piarists?<\/strong><\/p>\n

I wish piarists to be and remain disciples and witnesses of Jesus through the footsteps of our Founder Joseph Calasanz. And to constantly pay attention to the voice of God as Calasanz says “God’s voice is the voice of the Spirit, which comes and goes, touches the heart and passes away; we do not know from where it comes or when it will blow; that\u2019s why it matters much to be always vigilant, so that it will not come suddenly and pass without result<\/em>” I wish Piarist to start always afresh from Christ, and not from ourselves; starting from his questions, his invitations, and from there walk as Piarists.<\/p>\n
