The artist Emmanuel Cusnaider, at the request of Fr. Marcelo Ben\u00edtez Sch. P., wrote the following lines about the icon he painted of Blessed Joan Roig i Diggle:<\/p>\n
I will start with a brief description of the icon technique: it is painted with tempering paint, natural pigments with egg, on cedar wood prepared with levka (powder chalk, gelatin, etc.), which is the most suitable base for tempering paint.<\/p>\n
After studying a little about the life of the Blessed One and beginning the path of prayer proper to iconography, which consists in entering into friendly and fraternal dialogue with the saint that we will represent, thus the composition of the icon was born.<\/p>\n
I was moved by Joan’s courageous commitment to the parish where he developed his life of faith with his brothers. His perseverance in evangelization in difficult times. This is possible just for love.<\/p>\n
I see it as a good model for Christian youth. And reaching the example of his master, to give his life forgiving his executioners shows us the way, which is nothing but to be other Christs on earth, loving and serving all those around us.<\/p>\n
The orange aureole fire symbolizes the surrendered life, its martyrdom, its holiness of life.<\/p>\n
In his left hand he carries the palm of martyrdom as it appears in the Revelation when Patmos’ seer asks about who are this crowd dressed in white with palms on his hands and receives the answer: “These are those who come from the great tribulation, those who have washed and bleached their garments in the blood of the lamb” who loudly shouted “salvation comes from the Lord and from the lamb.” In this way we can say that with his martyrdom Joan joined that multitude of men and women who have shed their lives for Christ and whose blood, poured out of love, cries out to Heaven to descend God’s mercy for all human beings.<\/p>\n
In his right hand he holds a rosary sign of his devotion to Mary. I missed the sign of his Eucharistic devotion but I did not wanted to reload the icon with too many elements.<\/p>\n
The fact that he appears in a suit is very significant, but nothing forced since he was a layman and appears in the costumed photos, which was the usual dress of his time and also a sign of the understanding that the Holy Spirit gives to the Church about holiness.<\/p>\n
Joan Roig’s figure on the icon appears almost head-on but has a slight tilt to the right and his face is semi-profile. This indicates a double movement. It is turned to God and also turned to us as an expression of the Church’s own liturgy. He looks at us and enters into communion with us and at the same time he turns to Heaven, to Christ, inviting us to enter into communion with Christ. He, as a member of the triumphant church, invites us, a pilgrim church, to live our daily lives in the presence of God.<\/p>\n

El artista Emmanuel Cusnaider, a petici\u00f3n del P. Marcelo Ben\u00edtez Sch. P., escribi\u00f3 las siguientes l\u00edneas sobre el icono que pint\u00f3 del Beato Joan Roig i Diggle:<\/p>
Comenzare\u0301 con una breve descripci\u00f3n de la t\u00e9cnica del icono: esta\u0301 pintado con pintura al temple, pigmentos naturales con huevo, sobre madera de cedro preparada con levka (tiza en polvo, gelatina, etc.), que es la base m\u00e1s adecuada para la pintura al temple.<\/p>
Luego de estudiar un poco sobre la vida del beato y comenzar el camino de la oraci\u00f3n propia de la iconograf\u00eda, que consiste en entrar en di\u00e1logo amistoso y fraterno con el santo que vamos a representar, naci\u00f3 as\u00ed la composici\u00f3n del icono.<\/p>
Me conmovi\u00f3 de Joan su valiente compromiso con la parroquia donde desarrollaba su vida de fe junto a sus hermanos. Su perseverancia en la evangelizaci\u00f3n en tiempos dif\u00edciles. Esto es posible solo por el amor.<\/p>
Lo veo como un buen modelo para la juventud cristiana. Y llegando al ejemplo de su maestro, de dar la vida perdonando a sus verdugos nos muestra el camino, que no es otro que ser otros cristos en la tierra, amando y sirviendo a todos los que nos rodean.<\/p>
La aureola naranja fuego simboliza la vida entregada, su martirio, su santidad de vida.<\/p>
En su mano izquierda lleva la palma del martirio como aparece en el Apocalipsis cuando el vidente de Patmos pregunta sobre qui\u00e9nes son esa multitud vestida de blanco con palmas en las manos y recibe la respuesta: \u201cEstos son los que vienen de la gran tribulaci\u00f3n, los que han lavado y blanqueado sus vestiduras en la sangre del cordero\u201d que a viva voz gritaban \u201cla salvaci\u00f3n viene del Se\u00f1or y del cordero\u201d. De esta manera podemos decir que con su martirio Joan se uni\u00f3 a esa multitud de hombres y mujeres que han derramado su vida por Cristo y cuya sangre, regada por amor, clama al Cielo para que descienda la misericordia de Dios por todos los seres humanos.<\/p>
En su mano derecha sostiene un rosario signo de su devoci\u00f3n a Mar\u00eda. Falto\u0301 el signo de su devoci\u00f3n eucar\u00edstica pero no quer\u00eda recargar el icono de elementos.<\/p>
El hecho de que aparezca con un traje es muy significativo pero nada forzado ya que \u00e9l era un laico y aparece en las fotos con traje, que era la vestimenta habitual de su \u00e9poca y tambi\u00e9n un signo de la comprensi\u00f3n que el Esp\u00edritu Santo va dando a la Iglesia sobre la santidad.<\/p>
La figura de Joan Roig en el icono aparece casi de frente pero tiene una leve inclinaci\u00f3n hacia la derecha y su rostro esta\u0301 de semi-perfil. Esto indica un doble movimiento. Esta\u0301 volcado hacia Dios y a su vez vuelto hacia nosotros como una expresi\u00f3n de la misma liturgia de la Iglesia. Nos mira y entra en comuni\u00f3n con nosotros y a su vez se vuelve hacia el Cielo, hacia Cristo, invit\u00e1ndonos a entrar en comuni\u00f3n con Cristo. \u00c9l, como miembro de la iglesia triunfante nos invita a nosotros, iglesia peregrina, a vivir nuestra cotidianidad en la presencia de Dios.<\/p>
Bendito sea Dios en todos sus santos.<\/p>
