Drawn from the third chapter of Cristus Vivit,<\/em> the young and the little ones in their dynamism, through their very life and activities within the church, bear witness in their own way to the message of salvation of Christ to all mankind. This is not to start tomorrow, or in the near future, but as the Holy Father, Pope Francis says, it is to start now for the future of the children and youths begins today. But to be able to ensure that this flame remains burning in them, the pastoral care of youths must clearly be a part of the overall pastoral plan of parishes so that the young people will be able to discover very early the value of the gift of self as an essential means for the person to reach maturity and thus grow in love of God and neighbor.(Cf. Ecclessia in Africa no. 93) This is the very \u00a0essence of our being Piarists- the integral education of children and youths in piety and letters that they may be free from the bondage of sin and ignorance and thus live a happy life now and in the hereafter.(Cf.\u00a0 Our Constitutions no. 2, 5) It is in this spirit that the launching of the activities with the children and youths of St Michael\u2019s Parish Futru-Nkwen for the 2022\/2023 Pastoral year took place, on Sunday 16th<\/sup> October 2022. This event had two major objectives: First, That the children and youths of the parish may all come together and feel like one family irrespective of their differences and become aware that they all are actively a part of the evangelization mission of the Church and not just passive observers. Secondly, in a bit to instill the spirit of Calasanz Movement in them, it was an opportunity to make the elderly ones become aware that the care and encouragement of the younger ones is as well their responsibility such that the same spirit and zeal may animate the children at each stage of their life.<\/p>\n

It is in this light that the theme for the New Pastoral year was declared \u201cYou are the light of the world: a city built on a hill cannot be hidden\u201d (Matt 5:14). This event saw the coming together of over four hundred and fifty children and youths from all the six mission stations of the Parish: beginning with Holy Mass at 9:00am and proceeding with other socio-cultural activities after Mass in the hall.<\/p>\n

It is no doubt that the activities of the day and the joy expressed by the children were a clear sign that the future is indeed starting now. This is our mission, this is the core and foundation of our being as Piarists: that we may be clothed with the feelings of Christ and make ourselves cooperators of divine truth by adapting ourselves more to the way of life of the children and the poor (Cf. Our Constitutions no. 19), such that while death is at work in us, life increases in all. (Cf. C 18). May the Blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of our Lord and St Joseph Calasanz our Holy Founder continue to intercede for us as we strive each day to make Jesus Known and loved among the little ones.<\/p>\n
