Last Friday we celebrated with great joy and emotion the centenary of the presence of the Piarists in the city of Albacete.
The day began with a solemn Eucharist in Albacete Cathedral, presided over by the Father General of the Order, Pedro Aguado, and the Father Provincial, Iván Ruíz, accompanied by other priests who have been part of the history of our school.
The Mayor of Albacete, Mr Manuel Serrano, accompanied by the Councillor for Culture, Ms Elena Serrallé, attended this significant event. At the end of the celebration, the mayor declared that ‘it is a source of great pride to have an educational centre like The Pious Schools in our city, with 100 years of life and experience, where more than 700 students are currently enrolled’; he added that ‘it is an authentic educational reference point at a national level that attends to the educational needs and demands of the city of Albacete with the same enthusiasm and commitment as on the first day’.
After the Eucharist, the secondary school pupils went to the Film Library to enjoy an emotive documentary made by the teaching staff, which tells the story of the school over its 100 years of existence.
The day ended with a meal in the assembly hall, where the Piarist priests and the teaching staff gathered to share memories and anecdotes.
A day full of memories, gratitude and hope for the future, reaffirming the commitment of the Piarist School to education and the values of Saint Joseph Calasanz.
The school opened its doors in 1924, after several failed attempts in the 19th century. Since then it has fulfilled the educational and pastoral mission of the Pious Schools in Albacete, becoming one of the most charismatic and well-known schools in the city.
Since January of last year, 2024, the Piarist presence has been intensely celebrating its centenary in Albacete, organising different activities, such as reunions of classes of students who have been able to visit the school or the centenary logo competition.
