On January 18 and 19, 2021, a meeting of community rectors from the West African Province took place in the community of the Juniorate of Our Lady of Africa. Father Samson Ehemba, the changed assistant of community life, convened this meeting. The provincial congregation and all community rectors were present. The main objective of this meeting was to inquire about the experiences of our communities from their diverse realities and to reflect on the concrete means and the appropriate method that can help community rectors to better assume the mission assigned to them to serve the brothers of the community. Prayer, led by Father Samson, moderator of the meeting, opened this meeting. Following the opening prayer, Father Provincial Christian Ehemba offered us a meditation centered on the author Steve Gilligan, who declined three aspects that the one who exercises authority must embody: gentleness; strength and humor.

The actual meeting focused on:

  • Reflection and presentation of communities’ status. Community rectors took turns speaking for a summary presentation of the lives of their communities. This has resulted in a duly fruitful analysis with key proposals to strengthen the work of community rectors.
  • A summary study of community projects was done to identify strengths and weaknesses to identify the strategy and perspectives to meet the many challenges we face.
  • A training session for the operation of the Order’s and the Province’s sites. There are many sites where there is a database that we can use to expand our community activities.
  • In the end we worked on the Piarist community rector’s VADE MECUM, as the tool par excellence for guiding the office of community rector.
