On 24 February, Father General Pedro Aguado spoke at the Congress “The Church in Education”, organised by the Spanish Bishops’ Conference in the auditorium of the Pablo VI Foundation in Madrid. In his capacity as President of the Education Commission of the Union of Superiors General, Fr Aguado spoke in favour of achieving “the integral sustainability of the school”, which takes into account not only material resources, but also “a clear identity, a team, a leadership, a project and the conviction that it will live in a network”.
Father General also defended that the child is at the centre of the school because Christ is in him and that we must not lose sight of this horizon if we want to be a truly Catholic school; however, taking into account the current social and ecclesial context and accepting the challenge to care and serve.
The mission of the outgoing school, guided by the Educational Pact promoted by Pope Francis, must “take care of the needs of the poor, of those who are deprived of the help and affection of the family or who do not share in the gift of faith”. “To all these children and families we have something to say that resonates with the Gospel,” he said, referring to the diversity of today’s students: “Those who are very contrary must feel loved, those who belong to other religions must learn that together with another Catholic child they can build another world.
He concluded his speech by emphasising that we must renew our conviction “to be “a Catholic school with the children, because only with the children can we renew ourselves”.
