And he said to them, “This is my blood, the blood of the Covenant, which will be shed for the crowd” (Mk 14:24)

Informed of the attack that on July 31 have taken place against the chapel adjoining the Cathedral, which houses the image of the Blood of Christ and the Blessed Sacrament, in Managua, Nicaragua. The Archbishop of the capital, Card. Leopoldo Brenes, claims that some images and churches have been desecrated in recent days, and that what happened is a terrorist act that is part of an escalation of progressive attacks on some symbols of the faith. This time they have charred the image and the enclosure and desecrated the Reserve.

As members of the Nicaraguan Church, we reproach all acts that undermine the religiosity of our people and express a desire for vengeance and hostility against the Catholic faith. We remind those who exercise government functions that it is the obligation of the State to guarantee freedom of worship and respect for religious symbols, which are part of the cultural and religious heritage of our peoples.

The prophetic action of the Church will not stop before those perceived as being threatened by who is “the Way, the Truth and the Life” (John 14:6). Rather, we renew our commitment to denounce injustice and violence, and to proclaim a new world, in which the Kingdom of God happens as a full and definitive reality.

Troubles are round us on every side, but we are not shut in; things are hard for us, but we see a way out of them;  We are cruelly attacked, but not without hope; we are made low, but we are not without help; In our bodies there is ever the mark of the death of Jesus, so that the life of Jesus may be seen in our bodies.” (2Cor. 4, 8-10)
